Evolution - Will People Ever Get It?

Here we go again. Click on the following link to read about how various states are trying to enact laws that force teachers to offer critiques of evolution.

Boy, these people just will not give up. First they tried to mandate that intelligent design should be taught along with evolution in science classes. Since that's failed, now they still want to try to attack evolution by requiring that at least some critique of it is offered. The folks pushing this agenda are doing their best to say it's not about creationism or intelligent design but it clearly is just another back door way of attacking the theory of evolution.

Look, I'm not against intelligent discussion of scientific theories. What really angers me about this is that fact that these moronic politicians who keep trying to shape science education clearly have no understanding of science. First and foremost, science is self-critiquing. Do these idiots think that evolution has never been challenged? They have zero understanding of the scientific method and yet they want to impose curriculum changes upon teachers. It's absolutely infuriating.

I'm sure none of these idiots would ever happen across my blog but if anyone who agrees with them does, please get it through your incredibly dense skulls that the reason evolution is called a "theory" by scientists is because in science you always keep the door cracked for the chance that you might be wrong. Evolution appears in science textbooks as the best explanation for the progression of life on this planet because it has stood up to repeated scrutiny and demonstrated predictability and replicable results. ANY viable scientific theory has already stood up to far more analysis and criticism than creationism or intelligent design. That's what differentiates science from faith or mere opinion.

When I read articles like this it really is no wonder to me that our kids are falling further and further behind the rest of the world. While they embrace technology and new knowledge, our society seems increasingly scared of scientific progress and our reaction is to cloak ourselves in superstition and mysticism. That is no way to continue to be a superpower. We attack intellectuals, poke fun at scientists, and elect buffoons to the highest office. Sounds a lot like the last days of the Roman Empire.

You are quite right. My friend Shadow in fact wrote a small treatise on how very similar things are now to those last days of Rome.

The more I read about things like this and think about how Americans gave George Bush their blessing for him to run this country into the ground, the more I agree with you that we get the leaders and the lives we deserve. I just hope the rest of us have time to head for the hills!

-yeah, that says a lot. They undermine science and obviously don't pay attention to history either.

I guess what amazes me is that I don't see the anger in this country. Where is the anger that we continually rank below other industrialized nations in science and math education? We simply decide that we need some other new form of teaching method. Meanwhile, the countries that are kicking our butts use the oldest teaching methods available. Have stern teachers, strict discipline, make kids sit in their chairs and pay attention, and challenge kids to stretch themselves. Don't make it easy. Don't just try to pass kids and inflate graduation numbers. Instead, demand that kids expect more from themselves and create a culture where teachers are respected and education is valued. We don't have that in America any more.

I just don't see people being really upset. Yeah, we all bitch about Bush but in other countries there would be 200,000 people in the streets protesting. Here? Nothing. We complain about gas prices, food prices, health care, housing, etc., but I don't see any outrage. We complain and then we just pay the bills. And we elect George to a second term. It's mind-boggling.

There's no anger because they are all going to be raptured, and then everything will be fine. No need to worry about the worldly things... like science and math and the environment, etc. grrr.

Ahh Blueberry, good point. Somehow I always forget about the rapture.

Seriously, I think you're onto something. Most European countries are more secular than we are and maybe there's a correlation between believing that there's some guys in the sky taking care of you and living your life as is governments and corporations will take care of you.

Vixen - thanks for the update!
