By now, you've all seen the story of Brianna Dennison, the college student who has gone missing from a friend's house in Reno, Nevada. If you haven't heard about it, you will. The 24 hour coverage machine has got to be cranking up right about now. Greta Van Susteren and Nancy Grace are lubing up and lining up their list of "expert" has-beens and never-was's. You know, people like Mark Fuhrman who, last I knew, was pretty much an admitted racist who helped screw up the OJ trial but is now some kind of supercop with amazing criminal insights. Still, you'll be hearing a lot about the case. Not because there's anything particularly compelling about it. Oh, except for the fact that the missing girl happens to be young, white, and very attractive.
That's how you get people to pay attention if you're missing. Fat black woman? Not much hope of finding you. Male? Forget it. C'mon, no one's even looking for you. Elderly? Maybe, but that's only because people want to make sure their inheritance is safe. Nope, unless you're a pretty white girl no one really cares if you disappear. I suppose that a good thing if you want to disappear intentionally. I also suppose that there's some poetic justice to it since it's also hard to get a job as a female correspondent on Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC unless you're also a pretty white girl. Okay, to be fair, they also have some pretty black girls on their networks. Light-skinned black girls but there are a few. Hey, I hope they find this girl and she's okay, though I'm pretty sure she's dead. I'm just saying that if I ever go missing, I want someone to put out a picture of a pretty white girl wearing my clothes. Maybe then I'll at least have a chacne of being found.
