This past Saturday I actually got to fly a plane. I've loved airplanes ever since I was a little kid and one of my co-workers is a pilot who invited me to fly this weekend. We flew in the single engine Cessna pictured above. We basically flew between 1,800 and 2,000 feet and he did all the hard work. However, he did let me take the controls for about ten minutes. I pretty much just had to keep the plane level but I did get to descend, ascend, and make right and left turns.
It's pretty small inside one of these planes. The cockpit is pictured below. It was really good time and a lot more relaxing than you might think. I was a bit nervous taking the controls but again, I didn't really do much and my friend would not have allowed anything bad to happen. Last summer I flew in a World War II bomber with my father and that was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had but I have to say that just being able to make a couple of turns in this little plane was pretty fun. Now if I can just get that ride with the Blue Angels...

Whoa, that's cool. I'm sure the sensation is much different in a little plane, feeling every bump and drift.
It's fun to learn that you do have a few thrills you like to seek out. What other secret hobbies do you have, Doc? No...wait...better not tell us.

That is so neat! Brings back memories of my dad flying us around in his Piper Pacer. He taught us kids about squawk, ident, lift, drag...oh, and what to do if the plane began plummeting to our deaths. Maybe my flights weren't as relaxing as yours. I think he got a sly kick out of freaking us out!
But in all seriousness, flying IS a lot of fun.
Why don't you go get your license? Sounds like it's been a dream of yours for a while. You should go for it!
