A Little Bit of Merv

I was sorry to see that Merv Griffin has died. This is yet another relic from my childhood, even though he was really an entertainer from my parents generation. Still, my folks liked watching his talk show and, from what I can remember, I didn't mind it either. He had a lot of stars as guests that people today consider sort of cheesy like Dean Martin or Shelly Winters. In the end though, I think today's celebrities are actually more chessy. And at least Merv had class, something that is missing from talk shows today. Rest in peace Merv.

I was so brought up on Merv Griffin. All the cool cheesy stars were on there. But he was pretty good at what he did. I feel a little lost, watching as all the entertainers from my parents' era finally pass into oblivion. With my folks gone, these icons are all I have -- well that, and my four siblings. But sometimes I feel closer to Tony Bennett than my older brothers.

It is strange because these stars seemed less disposable than the people today. I mean, it sounds cruel to say but is anyone outside of her family really going to care when Britney Spears dies? Merv Griffin's death obviously does not affect me personally since I never knew the man but it did jus tmake me pause and reflect a few minutes. I can think of too many modern celebrities who will have that effect on me.
